What does Discipleship Look Like?

Hey Team,
What a great day we had! The picnic was great. The food was great. The fellowship was great. The weather was great. And best of all, we were able to meet great new friends. (However, I could have done without loosing the pastor's volleyball tornament. I think it was fixed.)

Anyway, thanks to all who made the day special. I can see why "Doing Life Together" is more than a slogan, it is a mantra.

Well, most of the people I talk to ask me what it is I am going to be doing at Trinity. When I mention the aspect of discipleship, it seems there is a big agreement that there needs to be a more focused effort in this area. Although our team has a responsibility to examine discipleship and ministries, I think it would be prudent for us to focus on one area at a time.

So... here are two questions to ask ourselves:
1. What is a disciple? I mean a true disciple. In other words, what is our goal?
2. If Trinity was known best for its discipleship, what would that look like? What would we be doing?

It would be great to hear your thoughts on this. Let's dream together.

Have a great Labor Day (don't work to hard),
Pastor Keith

Pastor Keith,

Wow! I agree the picnic was wonderful! LET'S HAVE IT AGAIN! I believe the characteristics of a true disciple are: filled with the Holy Spirit, Word of God and love, a worshiper of God (life-style), a helper, available (on-call), mentor, giving without reciprocity, an , loving mercy, walking humbly, restorer,. I believe our goal should be to pursue love and desire the spiritual gifts that will edify the church, it's family and all those we come in contact with. Trinity would be a place where people shed their guilts and fears without hesitation because a blanket of God's love covers it. It would be a place where healing ( physical and spiritual) would take place on a continual basis while prayer warriors constantly offer prayers up to the throne of God to combat the spiritual warfare. That's all for now. Have a great day.

From what I know of true disciples, a true disciple that has kinetic energy is one who has surrendered their life totally to Christ and so is free to do whatever he asks, studies the Bible regularly, is constantly praising God in their actions, practices their faith in tangible ways...and of course all of the stuff that the previous commenters already mentioned.
A church that is best known for its discipleship would probably look to people from other churches like a people who love each other deeply, excel in wisdom and knowledge, practice the fruits of the Spirit, are teachers and pastors, and are led by the Spirit in all their ways. They would be growing in their faith, and would be the first group of people that others think of when they think of someone both wise and loving.
